Anyone who has parked a car outside in Cumming, Alpharetta or Johns Creek in late March knows what North Georgia pollen season looks like. The obvious question, if you are pricing gutter guards, is whether they keep it out.
The honest answer is no, and pollen is in fact the thing most likely to make a good guard underperform. That is worth understanding before you buy, because it changes what you should expect rather than whether you should buy.
Pollen is not a clog, it is a film
Leaves and needles block a gutter by filling it. Pollen does something different. The grains are far too small for any guard to exclude, so they pass onto and into everything, then combine with water and the grit washing off an asphalt roof to form a fine, sticky film.
On an open gutter that film settles into the channel as a layer of sludge that dries into a crust. On a micro-mesh guard it does something more awkward: it coats the mesh itself. The openings that were sized to pass water while excluding grit gradually close, and once enough of them have, water runs across the top of the mesh and over the front lip. The gutter stays perfectly clean and the water never reaches it.
So why fit guards at all in Forsyth County?
Because pollen is a few weeks and needles are the rest of the year. Northeast Georgia lots are heavily pined, and pine needles are exactly what a fine micro-mesh handles better than any alternative. Trading a manageable seasonal surface issue for year-round exclusion of the material that actually fills gutters is usually a good trade.
What changes is the expectation. A guard sold as "never clean your gutters again" will not survive contact with a North Georgia spring. A guard understood as "your gutters no longer fill, and the mesh gets rinsed after pollen season" is an accurate description of what you are buying.
Which guard types cope, and how
Micro-mesh is the most affected and still usually the right choice here. Its failure is a surface film, it is visible from a ladder, and it clears with a soft brush or a rinse. The finer the aperture, the better it excludes needles and the sooner it films. That is a real trade-off, not a marketing one.
Reverse curve is less troubled by pollen specifically, because there is no fine mesh to blind, but its slot admits pollen and grit straight into the gutter, where they build the same sludge you were trying to avoid, out of sight. It also has its own limit in the heavy spring downpours that follow pollen season, when water can overshoot the nose entirely.
Screens do not blind, because their openings are far too large to be closed by a film. They also do not stop the needles, which is what you needed them for.
Foam is the worst option in a pollen market. It holds the fine material inside the channel and turns it into a growing medium.
The practical routine
Rinse the top surface of the mesh once pollen season ends, generally late April or early May here. On a single-storey house that is a hose from a ladder. On anything higher, or with a steep pitch, it is worth having it done at the same visit as a spring gutter check, because it is the same trip.
Watch the front lip during the first heavy rain after pollen season. Water running over the front edge of the guard rather than through it is the symptom, and it means the surface needs attention, not that the system has failed.
